The Story of UGH
Wendy walked through the woods. She had to get to her friend, Marcus, because she wanted to show him a new cough medecine which she thought could help his sick father. She felt quite haughty about having the chance to help Marcus' father. When she got to Marcus' house, though, he was not impressed.
"That's no good for my father," Marcus told Wendy. "He's allergic!"
"Oh," said Wendy.
"I know you like to surprise me, but please call next time. And think thoroughly."
Wendy walked home, embarrassed. And I went through all this trouble, Wendy thought to herself. How stupid of me.
"What's wrong, daughter?" Asked her mother, Donna.
"Mr. Burroughs is sick; but I got him the wrong medicine," she told her mother, referring to her best friend's father.
"Admit it; you were trying to impress Marcus, weren't you?"
"Yes," she said, sheepishly.
"You know, Wendy, surprising someone like that with good intentions can easily backfire."
Wendy had never thought of such a thing. Were good deeds not always rewarded?
"I guess I overthought," Wendy said.
"You certainly did," Donna said. Wendy was upset. What she really wanted to do was win Marcus' heart by showing she cared about him and not-so-much his father. But, alas!
"What medecine did you bring to Mr. Burroughs, anyway?" Donna asked.
"Sorgakoganon," said Wendy. "I thought it would be good for his fever."
"That was very doughty of you, Wendy."
That made Wendy feel forthoughtful. "I will ask next time," Wendy assured her mother.
"Help me knead this dough, Wendy. We need to make some more bread for ourselves."
"Why can't the bread just be bought at the supermarket, Mom?"
"Although there is plenty of bread at the store, it's all full of preservatives-- or worse. You know; chemicals they put in food so it won't go bad, but in the end, it's bad for us," Donna explained.
"Aren't you a little paranoid, Mother?" Asked Wendy.
"Don't be so haughty with me, you naughty little brat! And how many times do I have to say 'no doughnuts before dinner'? I ought to..." Without a thought, Wendy's mom slapped the circle-shaped treat out of Wendy's hand. It fell on the floor. Wendy suddenly felt distraught. First, her best friend's father was sick, then she brings the wrong medecine, and now her mother actually used force on her. Wendy's mother never used force on anyone. She certainly never used it on Wendy before. But now she had.
"Mama! How could you?"
"I ought to do that to myself," Donna mumbled. She knelt down and looked Wendy in the eye.
"I'm sorry I overreacted. But if you don't eat that doughnut right now, I promise you can have it after dinner." She kissed Wendy's hand; the hand that held the doughnut; the one she instinctively slapped.
"I understand you overreacted, Mom," Wendy said. "It's okay. I won't eat any dessert food right before dinner. I was naughty." She looked down at the floor. Wendy's mother did not expect her daughter describe herself that way; as if she were repenting for some mistake like making a video about her father's company's latest invention before it went to market and posting it online, which she knew could get him fired..
"No, you were not naughty, Wendy. You were just being impulsive."
Impulsive? Wendy had never heard that word.
"What's that word mean, Mama?"
"Wendy, take that dreadnought off," Donna instructed, ignoring Wendy's question. "Aren't you hot?"
Suddenly, Wendy did feel the heat. She took the dreadnought off and put in in the closet. She thought about her haughtiness before. She forgot about her wondering what the word impulsive meant. She had learned in Sunday School that pride was one of the seven deadly sins. Although she was an atheist, Wendy did believe there was some common sense in the Bible.
"What is for dinner, anyway, Mama?" She besought to know.
"It's a surprise, dear," Wendy's mother said. Wendy rolled her eyes behind her mother's back. Yeah; and I just love surprises. Not! Wendy thought to herself, shaking the hand that held the doughnut; the one her mother instinctively slapped. That slap was a surprise if I ever got one.
And Wendy's mother kept telling herself she would never get physical or overreact like that with Wendy or anyone else again.
After a delicious dinner, Wendy finally got to eat her doughnut. It tasted great. She felt better about herself and thought about how she bought the wrong medecine and then brought it over to Marcus' father.
The next day. Marcus went with Wendy to the drug store. "That's the one. Right there. See it?"Sorgakoganom. With an 'm' at the end; not an 'n.' Get it?" She was embarrassed to know that she actually bought her future father-in-law herpes medecine as a gift. But afterward, everything was okay.
"It's wonderful how you thought about my father like that, Wendy," Marcus assured her.
They kissed.
Mission accomplished, Wendy told herself.
